TaxonomyFormally classified in the genus Aratinga but is now a species in it's own genus being Guaruba. The specific and genera names guaruba and guarouba mean small yellow bird. The difference in spelling of the two names is made by Gmelin and Lesson, specific name by Gmelin in 1788 and genera name by Lesson in 1830. Its indigenous Portuguese name ararajuba means small yellow macaw. Molecular studies show that the golden conure (Guaruba) and the red-shouldered macaw (Diopsittaca) are closely related.

TemperamentVery sociable and seldom fight. Highly intelligent and extremely sensitive. Very playful and enjoy climbing, swings and ropes. Golden Conures make excellent pets, loving attention, to be petted and touched. When tame they are extremely gentle and can remain tame even in an aviary environment.Excellent flight ability and maneuverability.Prone to feather plucking so healthy diet, environment and social development is essential. Require access to regular bathing.Eat insects and lavae, fruits, flowers, berries, seeds and nuts in the wild.Can be loud, shrill voice. Up to 9 young in a nest in the wild and up to 14 in captivity have been recorded. Clutches laid are usually 3 eggs (or 1-6 eggs) approximately 37.1 x 29.9 mm and average 14-15 grams. Incubation period is about 25-26 days to hatch and chicks hatch weight normally about 9 grams.Male and female take turns in incubation. Only female broods, male guards the nest. Not fussy with aviary or nestbox design.
